This walking tour with our guide Sarah will focus on a charming neighbourhood in Blair Plain named after John Blair who was a British officer with the Tanjong Pagar dock company.

Many wealthy Chinese merchants settled in what in now a conservation area located in the outskirts of Chinatown and near the Tanjong Pagar port. They commissioned the best architects to design their homes such as Swan and McLaren, Jose D’Almeida and Wee Teck Moh (the” king of shophouses”) to name a few.

In this conservation area we will discover the finest examples of Chinese houses still standing offering a mixture of architecture styles known as the “Eclectic Style”.

Sarah will share with us the origin of shophouses and styles such as Rococo, Baroque, Jubilee and art deco. We will see the beautiful ornate terrace houses on Blair Road and focus on windows, doors, imported tiles and special features embedded in the facade of the various shophouses.

As we walk along Neil Road, we will stop in front of the beautiful Peranakan “Baba House”, home of shipping tycoon Wee Bin built in 1895 and restored under NUS in 2008.
